Cumin, also called comino, is a savory, earthy spice with a tangy, musky aroma that is related to the parsley family. It’s commonly used in Indian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern dishes. It is an ancient seasoning that has been found in Syrian excavations dating to approximately 2000 B.C. that was used not only in cooking but also in preserving mummies. It was used extensively by the Greeks and Romans and then made its way to South American during the European colonization.

  • Used in chili, barbecue sauce, baked beans, rice and soups.
  • Can be used in rubs and marinades
  • Is the main ingredient in curries and garam masala
  • Excellent with meats and vegetable dishes
  • Use sparingly, as it can become bitter and overwhelming fairly quickly.
