Nutmeg is the seed of the nutmeg tree, which is indigenous to the Spice Islands. In American cuisine, this sweet and delicate, yet surprisingly intense, spice is considered essential to fall and winter dishes, but has been used in cuisines around the world since the first century. For the serious baker, nutmeg presents an opportunity to add a fresher nutmeg taste than its pre-ground counterpart. It also has a longer shelf life.
