Nigella has been used since antiquity, so far back that it was included in the food stored in King Tutankhamun’s tomb. These slightly bitter seeds have a nuanced oniony flavor, despite being unrelated to the onion family. They are also known as black onion seed, black caraway seed, and kalonji.
